Antidepressants are among the most common drugs used in USA. These medicines should regulate the chemical imbalance in the body because it is believed that low serotonin level is the main cause for people to suffer from anxiety and depression. But this theory is not true because there is no evidence that anyone has an imbalance of any neurotransmitters or other brain chemicals.
Many experts have tried to refute the theory about chemical imbalance over the past ten years. One of them is David D. Burns and he claims: “This theory is fueled more by drug company marketing than by solid scientific proof. Billions of dollars of annual profits from the sale of antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications are at stake, so drug companies spend vast amounts of money promoting the chemical imbalance theory. They also subsidize a large portion of the budget of the American psychiatric Association and underwrite an enormous amount of research and education at medical schools.”
He also adds: “Academic research should be all about getting to the truth. Drug company research is all about selling new products.” and “But if I tell you that your depression or panic attacks result from a chemical imbalance in your brain, then I’m telling you something that can’t be proven, because there is no test for a chemical imbalance in the human brain.”
There are some important studies which show that depression is actually caused by allergic reaction to inflammation.
Inflammation can be caused due to some injury, infection or foreign invasion. When there is an inflammation, our body produces many chemicals like cytokines. Tim de Chant of NOVA claims: “Inflammation is our immune system’s natural response to injuries, infections, or foreign compounds. When triggered, the body pumps various cells and proteins to the site through the blood stream, including cytokines, a class of proteins that facilitate intercellular communication. It also happens that people suffering from depression are loaded with cytokines.”
People can have chronic inflammation due to unhealthy diet, foods with high amounts of trans fats, obesity etc. Americans are especially in danger as they consume a lot of food rich in omega 6 fatty acids and a lack of omega 3s.
Inflammation and Gluten
Gluten is the most common culprit for getting inflammation. Gluten first enters into the intestinal system, then through the bloodstream reaches the brain. There it cause inflammation which eventually can lead to some mental disorders like Parkinson’s, seizures, Alzheimer’s and even schizophrenia.
